Micellar Water for Your Skin Care

Micellar Water: What is it, and How do you Use it

Micellar water is often hailed as a miracle water for all your needs. Celebrities swear by it, but not all dermatologist in Singapore and the rest of the world do. They have their pros and cons that people need to pay attention to before using a product. So let’s have a look at what micellar water is all about and how you can properly use it in your skin care.

What is Micellar Water?

Micellar water is a solution of soft water with surfactants suspended inside. Surfactants are molecules that both trap water and oil. It may sound contradictory, but this allows oil and grease to be dissolved in water and washed away. They are found in a lot of hygiene products such as soap and shampoos. Surfactants can be also be found in food such as mayonnaise as it keeps the oil emulsion in place.

Inside micellar water, the surfactants form into clusters called micelles where inside in the solution they are attracted to water. When poured onto a cotton pad, the micelles rearrange themselves such that they will be attracted to oil. With every wipe of a cotton pad soaked with micellar water, the micelles will pull away oil from your skin.

Benefits of Micellar water

Oil and Makeup Remover
One very well-known benefit of micellar water is that it is a great way to remove your makeup and excess oil from the skin. One of the properties of micellar water is that it attracts oil and since makeup is largely oil based, you can easily wipe your makeup. Micellar water can be used to clean makeup brushes too.

Suitable for Dry and Sensitive Skin
Micellar water, by itself, is gentle on the skin. In other cleanser and makeup removers, there could be harsh chemicals or alcohol inside that can cause irritation to the skin. These chemicals could leave the skin drier or damage the skin. Micellar water will not cause any form of irritation; it would just feel like water on the skin.

Ideal for travel
There are so many micellar water products that are travel friendly where you can just put it into your handbag or your carry-on luggage when flying. There are even now micellar facial wipes which are very handy. It is a convenient way to feel fresh without have to lug your skin care products everywhere you go.

Drawbacks to Micellar Water

Does Not Remove All Dirt and Makeup
Many people say that you do not need to rinse your face after using micellar water. However, that is not true. Dermatologists say that micellar water just moves the makeup around the face, meaning that not all the makeup is fully removed. As such, there may be some residue left on the skin which can clog the pores and cause an acne breakout.

Micellar Products Containing Harsh Chemicals
Some of the micellar water products on the market may contain ingredients, like fragrance or alcohol, that can irritate the skin. This can cause irritation or a burning sensation on the face and may have severe effects for those with skin conditions.

Does not Solve your Skin Issues
Micellar water is definitely no miracle water. Yes, it can provide short term hydration or gentle cleansing of the skin whenever you need it. However, in the long term, it would not solve your skin issues like dry skin, acne or wrinkles. You would need specialised treatments and products that target the problem head on.

How to Use Micellar Water in your Skincare

That being said, using micellar water can be a good addition to your skin care routine. However, there are some points to take note before using it

  • Choose a micellar water that is suitable for your skin type.
  • If you have sensitive skin, pick a product that does not have alcohol, fragrances and other drying ingredients. It is a good idea to read product reviews before buying them.
  • Ensure that your cotton pads and hands are clean before applying it on the face

As mentioned above, micellar water can be used to remove makeup and oil. Pour some micellar water on a cotton pad and gently wipe away the makeup. You need to use a couple of pads in order to wipe away all the makeup on the face (especially waterproof eye makeup).

After that, it is back to your usual skin care routine. After using the micellar water, you need to cleanse your face to ensure that all the makeup and dirt remnants are washed away. Use a cleanser, toner and some moisturiser to ensure that all the dirt is gone and that your skin does not dry out.  Again, make sure that these facial products are suitable for your skin type too.

Micellar water can be used as a quick refresher throughout the day. If you feel that your skin is too oily and grimy, micellar water can give your face a quick clean. However, take note that it does not substitute the effectiveness of a proper cleanser and toner.

As you have read from above, micellar water, when used properly, can your life a little bit easier in your skin care. However, it is not the same as doing your full skin care routine nor does it solve any skin issues like acne.

Remember not to keep tugging at your eye area when removing make-up. Skin around the eyes are delicate and being over rough will damage the skin and muscles over time. If you feel you have droopy eyelids, it could also indicate a medical condition known as Ptosis (which is medisave claimable).
